Sustainability at SUDenergie
About our history

The development of SUDenergie dates back to 1899, when a gasworks was built in Esch-sur-Alzette by the Carl Francke company from Bremen. At the time, the gas produced – known as town gas – was toxic and less efficient, and was mainly used for public lighting. The network was quickly expanded to Schifflange in 1905 and later to other surrounding municipalities.

The establishment of the Compagnie Générale pour le Gaz et l’Électricité in 1923 marked the next phase of growth, leading to the company being taken over in 1953 by six Luxembourgish municipalities. In 1966, local gas production was discontinued, and gas was henceforth imported. By 1972, the entire network had been converted to natural gas, which is both safer and more efficient. Just three years later, additional municipalities joined the shareholder group.

In 1989, the company was renamed SUDGAZ S.A., and more municipalities became shareholders. Today, the company operates under the name SUDenergie and has 14 shareholder municipalities.

Over these 125 years, the company has continuously evolved – always with the same mission: to provide its customers with energy reliably and under the best possible conditions.
